Learn to maximise your use of available light

Timothy Allen’s 2018 Summer Photography Retreat will take place on the first weekend of August in the Brecon Beacons National Park in Mid Wales, United Kingdom.  This two day workshop aims to teach all aspects of Timothy’s style of photography from the image making process through to editing and post production skills.    Participants can also expect a frank and informal portfolio review along with a stimulating itinerary designed to leave everyone inspired and enthused at the end of a thoroughly enjoyable weekend in rural Wales.

The Llanthony Show: Plenty of opportunities for interesting documentary photography

Day 1 will begin at 9am sharp with introductions and a talk on practical photography technique before morning coffee, then a group portfolio review using 5 pre-selected images from each participant’s personal portfolio. After an early lunch we will travel up to the Black Mountains, over the Gospel Pass and into the remote Llanthony Valley to spend the afternoon shooting at the Llanthony Show, a little known and beautifully authentic Welsh country gathering which culminates in the locally infamous horse rodeo.  We will be back in Hay on Wye by early evening in time to enjoy some informal chat over dinner and a few drinks at a local restaurant in Hay.

Day 2 With our resident model, we will begin first thing with a natural light portraiture masterclass designed to highlight the ways Timothy uses available light when he is photographing people.  We will then commence the process of editing the images from our two shoots both individually and as a group, including a practical seminar on the essentials of post production & Photoshop technique.  We will prepare our images to publication standard and then round up the weekend with a talk on ‘marketing yourself in the social media age’ followed by a group slideshow and critique of our best images.

Last but not least, we will finish proceedings with the voting on, and presentation of our 2018 Best Shot Award… a beautiful (and now incredibly coveted!) solid pewter engraved trophy awarded to the weekend’s best shooter.
